Yes, thank you - I still have your  helpful reply re Abbey St. This is a new piece of info that my friend recently discovered. It was thought he stayed with the RCA for the period 1939-1957, but in fact he left at some point and turned shopkeeper, having shops at these two addresses. I put in the RCA bit here in case it triggered someones memory....have I fact started a new thread when I should have continued with the old one?  I am now focused on the Opal St shop, and the Winetavern Street to see if I can find out how long he had these shops and how he faired there, and if I can find photos of them.

I really do appreciate all this help,

Thank you. I have tried google Earth for 21 Winetavern Street, no joy. I guess there must have been some street renumbering at some point.
