I am struggling with the 1871 census for John, and am not convinced about the family mentioned above being the one you are looking for.

There are a good few John Grants born ca 1866 mentioned in the 1871 and 1881 census, but seemingly none recorded as living with a father John and mother Helen.  The ones that I have found are typically grandson's of the head of the household.

I am wondering if this could be Jane Anne Grant...

1881 Census Inverallen - Orphan Institution
Betsy Stewart   42
Jessie Macpherson   25
Jane Ann Grant   12 (b Duthil)
William Stuart   12
Ewen Macintosh etc
etc
etc

Do you know if John and Jane Anne were orphaned at an early age?

I think this is your John...

1871 Census - Duthil - Lochgorm Croft
John Grant   72
Mary Grant   75
Mary Phelse   43
Mary Grant   18
Thomas Hulse   12
John Grant   4  (grandchild)

Not sure where his parents are....

My reasons for believing this is the correct John jnr is because his father was from Lochgorm, and his grandparents were John & Mary Grant - see heads of household above.

Jane Anne, the wee sister, was born at Lochgorm too.

And here's wee sister with her Mum?!

1871 Census Duthil - Ess House
Helen Grant   27
Jane A Grant   2

And here's the Lochgorm household in 1881...

John Grant   83 Farmer
Mary Grant   85  Wife
John Grant   46  Son
Mary Hulse   53  Daughter
Mary Grant   28  Granddaughter
John Grant   14   Grandson
James Grant   7    G Grandson
Jessie Dishington   2  G Granddaughter
Ann Taylor   35   Boarder
Lizzie Haggarty   23  Boarder

Interestingly the boarder, Ann Taylor, is a native of Inverallen - where there is a Jane Anne Grant in the orphanage.

Hope this has helped.

Ana

Thank you so much for your hard work in helping find my family. The only information.

I have was John birth date 9 August 1866 and parents names.

Does the census say what job John Grant Sen does? On John Grant Jr marriage it states his

father was a Plasterer.

Thank you again.

When did John jnr get married, and to who?

I want to make sure I've got the right family, and that I'm not leading you down the garden path!!
