Big Favour Asked - Tingle
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 21:34 BST (UK) »
I am asking a big favour . Can someone please look on 1871 and see if there are any other families with the surname Tingle living on New Street, Barnsley, Yorkshire. I have found a family living at No 78

James Tingle Head 39 coal miner Barnsley Yorks
Ann Tingle Wife 37 Barnsley Yorks
William Tingle Son 18 Lab at Pit Barnsley Yorks
Henrietta Tingle Dau 16 Factory Worker Barnsley
Elizabeth Tingle Dau 13 Factory Worker Barnsley
Mary Ann Tingle Dau 9 Barnsley
Sarah Tingle Dau 8 Barnsley
Richard Tingle Son 3 Barnsley

The person I am looking for is not with this family. I am looking for Mary Jane Tingle c1856 Barnsley Yorkshire.

The person who I am helping has her marriage cerificate for marriage to Andrew Wright Jun Q 1872 Barnsley, On the certificate Mary Jane is aged 16 and living at New Street Barnsley but there is no house number and there is no Fathers name.

We cannot find anything for her before she was married.

I looked  and there are 305 addresses on New Street. I know I am asking a lot but I don't know what else to do. Ithought if I could find a Tingle family on the street I could research the family to see if she turns up with them. I have done this with the above Tingle family but she is not on 1861 census with them.

Searched for Mary Tingle in Yorkshire.

In Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield
George Tingle, Head, 46, Sheffield
Ann Tingle, Wife, 40, Sheffield
Mary Tingle, Daughter, 15, Sheffield

But surely, a 16 year old getting married is unusual, and would need father's permission - There may be Banns or a Licence to be found?

I am looking for Mary Jane Tingle c1856 Barnsley Yorkshire.
Hello

This might be a red herring but on the 1861 census (RG9/3446 Folio 100 Page 7) and on the 1871 census (RG10/4645 Folio 138 Page 22) there is a Mary Jane Ashton, born 1856 at Barnsley, who is shown as the daughter of Thomas and Eunice (Unas) Ashton.

Thomas Ashton married Eunice Tingle in the third quarter of 1861, so the children born prior to that date might have actually had the name Tingle.

It could be worth some further investigation if nothing else turns up.

Click here to see Eunice Ashton with some of her other children on the 1881 census. Her daughter Mary Jane is not with her and there does not seem to be a marriage for a Mary Jane Ashton in Barnsley between 1871 and 1881, so it is possible that she might have married as Mary Jane Tingle. Her sister Sarah Ann seems to have married Fergus Law in 1871 using the name Tingle but her other sister, Martha Elizabeth, married Frederick Ogley in 1877 using the surname Ashton.

Her other sister, Harriet, also seems to have married using the surname Tingle. In 1876 she married Andrew Broadhurst and they can be seen in 1881 by clicking here

Perhaps it is not a red herring after all?

How can I thank you  :) I think you have solved it posteria. I am going to check it out but it looks very promising.

I agree with you KGarrad, I would have thought she would have had to have permission to marry and thank you for the Tingle family you found.

Thank you Cardiff for the Tingle family on 1871 census on New Street I will look into them. I found a household on New Street on An****try and thought I could go through all the original sheets and see everyone who lived on the street, but the whole street was not done and after going through 3 different lots it was getting beyond a joke. I wish An****try had the same function as FindMyPast in that you can search for street.

Thank you all very much
