LINK: Change of Name Notices in "The London Gazette"
« on: Friday 08 April 05 18:28 BST (UK) »
I knew some of my ancestors who came from abroad changed their name and found two by accident when looking for something completely different  ;D

I'm not sure about the coverage but  to see what a record looks like try typing in Dembinsky as there is only one record (he changed his name to Harris)

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/44656/pages/9092/page.pdf new link July 2013

Hope this hasn't been posted elsewhere before.

p.s. forgot to say it seems a bit fussy how you search, for instance my chappie Herbert Henry Freiensener was not found using Herbert Freiensener but found him using either his full name or  Henry Freiensener - changed his names to Francis.

Jonathan

Great link Jonathon,   :)

I've just managed to find that my grandfather changed his name by deedpoll in 1937...now just need to find when he changed it for the second time.

Would agree that the search engine is a bit fussy, am sure I repeated one search twice..and once came up with results and once not ???

Best Wishes,
Emily

Hi Emily

Glad you got a result despite the dodgy search engine ;D

I thought I was going to have to go through some complicated application rigamarole so was pretty chuffed finding my two online.

All the best
Jonathan

Hello

One good source would be the British Library Newspaper Library at Colindale North London http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html but there may be other locations nearer you.  I'm not sure of the content pre-1900 I'm afraid.

Some naturalisations were noted in The Times, if you provide the name and approx date I'll look it up for you (if the surname is sufficiently uncommon, otherwise it will be a bit of a nightmare  ;) )
