Thanks all for your replies. I never thought about the lack of refrigeration being a time factor but it makes sense with the early inquest. Ive been on the sugar bakers site and Fredericks details will be added to it shortly. Its a really interesting site and i cant imagine what it must have been like working in 140 degrees f. Phil

Only just joined roots chat after reading Dave Francis' posting below on 15 October 2010.  It turns out that 'Flash Alf' Howe (the unfortunate recipient of the umbrella in the eye at Borough Market after an altercation with Edward Lamb, another Borough market trader) whose death, according to the Times reports, Dave's great-grandfather John Blackman witnessed, turns out to be my own great-grandfather.
