London BMD's 1530-1812
« on: Friday 15 October 10 21:06 BST (UK) »
Hi folks
I've just been checking this out on Ancestry (thanks for the heads up) and wonder if anyone can help with a couple of questions

In the burials I have an entry for John Natris 1760 with the letters NGL. This looks as if it has something to do with address. Any ideas what they stand for please.
Also if someone lived in Crooked Lane, City of London (from will) would they be buried in St Paul, Shadwell? Where is Shadwell?

Where is Shadwell?

Hi

From Wiki

Shadwell is an inner-city district situated within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets located on the north bank of the Thames between Wapping to the south and Ratcliff to the east. It is located 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Charing Cross and forms part of the East End of London.

Thanks Jan
My chap was a surgeon so it's possible he moved around a bit. The will was dated 1755 but not proved till 1763...so somewhere in that timeframe  ???

This satelight view shows Shadwell Basin quite well. You can zoom out from there to get your bearings.

Ah thank you, now I know where I am.
Seems a long way from the city itself ...maybe a boat ride down the Thames in the 1700's. I wish I knew definately where Crooked Lane was? I sort of imagine it in the streets around St Pauls.

Any ideas on the letters anyone?

Hi

This describes where Crooked Lane was.

Just need to find the right map now

"You can’t give kindness away.  It keeps coming back". Mark Twain (?).

This map is good. Running north from London Bridge is Fish St and you can make out St Michaels Ch. just to the west of Fish St. Panel E7.
Then used the pan tool above the map and go east to Panel E9 for Shadwell.

Both are within a mile of St Pauls, I'd say.
