Died at Bethlem Hospital
« on: Friday 15 October 10 22:59 BST (UK) »
My 3rd Great Grandfather was a Sargant Major with the 16th Lancers was was put into the Bethlem Hospital, St Saviour, County of Surrey, London, England where he died, May 13, 1879.  It was 7 months after he lost his wife.
How can I locate where he is buried?
John George Harold, Arthur Albert Harold, Harriette Leggatt, Charles Harold in England, Scotland & Wales.  John George Harold was a Sargent Major with the 16th Lancers.  So they moved often.

Hi

If the family claimed the body the best place to start is probably with cemeteries in the area they lived and where perhaps his wife was buried. If they didn't claim the body it would have been buried in a local cemetery in a common grave with a pauper's funeral.

The help guide at the top of the Rootschat Surrey board - 'A guide to burials in the London area' (since Southwark was in metropolitan Surrey, the area of the county that was absorbed into London) lists all the London civic cemeteries and gives links to the organisation (usually a London borough) which administers each of them.

Bethlem Hospital has its own archives. You can contact them if you wish to obtain a copy of his medical record if you have not already done so.
