Jon,
I think i have solved the mystery of Benjamin Harts military unit. The
Royal Victorian Volunteer Artillary Regiment was founded in 1858, and a medal
was given to the units members. Infantry and artillary units were set up in a
number of Melbourne suburbs . One of these suburbs was Richmond where
Benjamin lived. so it woud be plausible that the full title of Benjamins unit was
the Royal Victorian Volunteer Artillary Regiment of Richmond. How does that
sound?
                                               Regards

That would have to be it. Well done Peter.

Jonc,
Here is another element of the Gates sisters story that i had not put
together before. Whlle trawling through another forum i came across a post referring
to times  of birth on certificates. Ann Norahs time of birth is shown as 9.30 pm.
Margarets age on her marriage certificate is shown as a minor. That would suggest that Ann and Margaret were twins

Peter

I had previously thought that Ann was a twin given that the time of her birth is written on her birth certificate. 9.30 pm from memory.

Do you have a copy of Margarets certificate you can sent thru to me? You have my email address.
