Transportation to New South Wales
« on: Monday 18 October 10 22:10 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me trace an ancestor named Stephen Bigg who was transported to N.S.W. with the 3rd fleet in 1791.  He was sentenced to 7 years at Hertford Assizes on the 3rd March 1790. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi wisteria  :)

Do you want to trace him after he arrived in NSW, or before he left England?

Cheers

According to a muster taken in 1811, Stephen BIGG was transported on the ship "William and Ann".

He is shown in some records as BIGGS, which may help when searching for him.

Stephen BIGGS was listed on musters in 1817, 1818, 1820 and 1821 as a "Landholder in the Colony".  No records after that.  Can't see any marriage record for him in the NSW BDM index...there is one death for a Stephen BIGGS in Paddington, 1867 (3209/1867) with parents Alfred and "Redwell K".

You could try searching through the old newspapers online at the NLA for any mention of your fellow:

Hi Prue,
Thank you for your quick reply - I am looking for information both here in England & in Australia.  I am still waiting for info on his trial and what crime he had commited for his sentence to be 7 years transportation (probably not a lot).  I didn't know which ship he was sent on as records here state that no record were kept as to who went on what ship as there were 2000 + sent in the 3rd fleet.  According to my research Stephen was born in 1768 in Weston, Hertfordshire, son of Joseph & Elizabeth Bigg.  Any information you can let me have would be greatly appreciated as records here are scant or difficult to access. Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi wisteria :)

If you check the second message I posted, I've given you a bit of info there to start you off  :)
His ship is identified in the convict papers that survive for him.

Have you contacted the Hertfordshire archives/record office to see whether they have any Assizes records for that time?

Cheers

Hi Pru,
Thanks for your message - I am currently waiting for a reply from Hertford Record Office regarding the Assize court records for Stephen but they have informed me that it will take 10-14 days for them to reply to my query.  I will have to be patient in the meantime.  Thanks again for your help.
