photo dating please
« on: Tuesday 19 October 10 02:38 BST (UK) »
Could I have a date please on this photo.
As per photographer, it was taken in India & has written on the back "Indian cousin" but we believe he is in fact an Englishman, Herbert Groves, who worked on the railways in India & Burma.
A date would help establish if this is the case.

Thanks you kindly.

Debra

Hi Debra,

It looks like an army uniform to me, so it would be worthwhile you posting a link to this topic over on the Armed Forces board, to see whether they can identify anything from his uniform.

I have done a bit of a web search for the photographer, but not turned up anything about him.  I'm guessing that the photo was taken in the 1880s or 90s, but can't be very certain about it.

Cheers
Prue

Thanks Prue,

The place name appears to no longer exists, closest I got was Pune in western India.

Those collar badges definitely look like fusiliers to me - hard to see any detail on them though.

Yes, it's definitely what's now called Pune.  I visited many years ago...I believe the British had an important presence there during the 19th century (no, I didn't visit it THAT many years ago!).

Thank you everyone this is helping a lot.  One more question...
The following is what I found on the person we think this is, so could this be the same person?  The reference to "Medal with clasp" made me think it had a military reference rather than an award for services to the railway.

The India list and India Office List.
GROVES, Herbert, M.I.C.E., late India Public Works Dept. - Apptd., 23rd July 1868 and posted to Mysore; exec. engr., Feb., 1876; transfd to Central India, Oct., 1882 and employed on state railways.  tranfd to Burma, May 1887 (medal with clasp), services lent to Mysore state, July 1890; under sec. to govt. of Mysore, railway branch, July 1891; joint sec., July 1892; transfd to Burma, April 1895; suptg. engr. Nov., 1895; to Madras, Oct 1899; chief engr and sec to govt of Burma, Aug 1900; retd Sept., 1903.
