Douglas, Clark, McEwen, McKee, McMillan
« on: Wednesday 20 October 10 04:10 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate further information on the following County Antrim families:

1 - James Douglass (born abt 1798) married Isabella Clark (born abt 1802) on 8 Nov 1823 in Culleybackey (from IGI)
2 - Son, Moses Douglas(s) (born abt 1825) married Mary McEwen (McKeown?) (born abt 1829) in 1851 in Kilconriola
3 - Philip McEwen (McKeown?) married Catherine McEwen likely in the Ballymena area
4 - Francis McKee (born abt 1832) married Margaret McMillan (born about 1832) in about 1858

Looking forward to hearing from others on these families.

Thanks, Wayne62

Welcome to Rootschat. All the people you are searching for were born well before the start of civil registration in Ireland and early church records may not exist.

Starting with the 1st names on the list-
1 - James Douglass (born abt 1798) married Isabella Clark (born abt 1802) on 8 Nov 1823 in Culleybackey (from IGI)
The 1823 marriage is a submitted record whih may not be accurate or may be based on a reliable source such as a church record or family Bible. Their birthdates are probably not correct as this entry follows the usual LDS formula for assuming bride is 4 years younger than spouse and she was 21 years old at the time of the marriage.
Your next step would probably be to see if the church records for the family survive- any idea what religion? Cunningham Memorial Presbyterian Church (Cullybackey) records are quite good- baptisms from 1812 and marriages from 1818- they are on microfilm at PRONI (closed until April 2011 but church records avaiable at Cregagh Library) and Coleraine Library- see here:
www.presbyterianireland.org/about/records.html#c
If they weren't Presbyterian you can check for other denominations in this section of ANTRIM RESOURCES.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you for providing information on additional sources.  I agree that checking church records would be a good next step.  However, travelling from western Canada to Ireland will take a little time to plan!  I'll get there eventually, certainly after PRONI opens again.

I did some further searching online (using a new IGI FamilySearch product that is being tested) and found alternate birth dates for family #1!  The 1798 birthdate was shown as 1791 and the 1802 shown as 1795.  Probably a little more believable, but doesn't do much for my confidence in the years.  I don't know the religions of the 4 families although I suspect they were protestant as per future generations.

Thanks again.

Hello

Curious if you found out anything more regards your Moses Douglas?
Moses Douglas is a name used in my line, from Lurgan area, Armagh. First on record is Moses Douglass born about 1740 (ish). He married Catherine Marsden of Kinnego. Named a son Moses Douglas and had at least two grandson's named Moses. Your Moses is not one of them, but curious if you can trace your James (father of Moses?) furthur back?

Hi,
Wayne 62 has not been on this site in almost two years but hopefully he will see these.
On 28 Jul 1851 Moses Douglas married Mary O'NEILL in Ballymena Registrars Office in the parish of Kirkinriola. Fathers' names were James Douglas and Felix O'Neill.

Sorry to say I have nothing new with the Douglases in the past two years!  I was never able to find any further records of McKee or Douglas in Northern Ireland.  I just keep drawing a blank.  Maybe I have to plan a trip...

Regards, Wayne62

Thanks for getting back to me Wayne.

Not sure if there is a link between our families , but will keep your James in mind as we keep researching Lurgan. Armagh.

Did you see Kinkerswell's post? He found Moses marriage was to O'Niel, perhaps that will help?

All the best
Jenni
