George Spering, Fishmonger, Maryport
« on: Wednesday 20 October 10 21:10 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather moved from Glasgow to Maryport in 1940/41 and started working for George Spering whom I believe was a fish curer/monger?  I know that this was a long time ago but does anyone remember the Spering family?  My Grandfather's name was Alexander Lawrie and he was a bit of a rogue (loveable? not sure)  he left my mother and her 4 siblings in a notorious orphanage called Smylum when his paramour died in childbirth.....

Any help would be appreciated

Annie

Unmm! If you check historicaldirectories.org for cumberland and the nearest directories are 1847, Mannix, there are no Sperings, no fish processors and nearest  dates didn't reveal any thing else. Sorry but check my research cos you have more to gain.  sorry.  bob

Hi Bob,

Any help is appreciated, thanks.  I contacted the local authorities in Cumbria but I will have to visit in person.   I found this information about Mr Sperring in poor relief records in Glasgow and could well have been written down wrongly as the info was from a third party. Are the directories online and I could check for any fish related businesses, perhaps seeing a name would ring a bell!

Thanks again for you help, very much appreciated....

Yes. go to www.historicaldirectories.org and then follow instuctions as above. not an easy site to negotiate but maybe doing the feminine thing and reading instructions as opposed to ploughing on and only reading instructions when machine in pieces may help  - (wife looking over shoulder and dictating but then she was a headteacher and I'm just the retired anachist). Playing on here cos not sure what to do after retirting from anarchy ???

The pair of you seem to be talking about different centuries :)
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

There's a Maryport in Scotland over the water from Maryport in Cumbria.

Okay I'll ask around Maryport for you.
I've only heard of Jackon's and Palmer's fishmongers here.
