Hi, there:  LDS has a record of a George Main born about 1816 in Portlethen, Kincardine, died 29 June 1892 also in Portlethen, parents John Main and Margaret Main.  Don't know if this is the same one - I realize it doesn't help you with his exact date of birth, but it could be the same guy.

Hi, again.  I've found the 1851-1881 censuses for George, with his wife Helen.  George Jr was married to Ann (they lived with pops in 1881).  There are other Mains in the village.  Their address all the way through was Portlethen, which would appear to be an address in Banchory-Devenick so try SP again under that village name.  Strangely enough, at the same time my GGGF and family (the Cravens) all lived in Banchory-Ternan!
Hope this helps

Hi, again:  You are right.  I've just purchased some more credits with SP and I cannot find George's birth either.  I have found a marriage on LDS of a John and Margaret Main in Banchory-Devenick on 5 Apr 1812 and what would appear to be the birth of 4 children - John, 2 Margarets and a Robert - but no George anywhere.  There's just the censuses and the death cert that you have to show he was ever on this earth!  The Scottish OPRs are notoriously lacking; the only solution would be to go there (or do you live in Oz or somewhere equally distant?)  I currently live in Canada but will be returning to the UK next year (permanently) and will be visiting Banchory.  I'll make a note to contact you this time next year (unless I find anything in the meantime)

Greetings from the land of my birth (finally)!!

Well, as I said, I'm in touch again, almost exactly a year later.  We are now settled back in the UK (Newark area) but are not contemplating popping up to the Banchory area until next spring or so.  However, I just wanted you to know that I have not forgotten you.  If you have found any more information out about the elusive George, let me know.

Hi, there:  Just thought I'd let you know we are visiting Banchory in mid-April for a couple of days so have added the Main family to my 'graveyard search' notes.  If I find anything, I'll take photos and let you have them with all the details I can find.  Hopefully I can also settle a couple of questions of my own in regard to Craven/Watson!

Best regards
