C E Clifford and Co COMPLETED
« on: Friday 22 October 10 14:17 BST (UK) »
My grandfather owned an art gallery in Piccadilly. I have just downloaded one of his catalogues and it states "Published by C E Clifford and Co; St James Gallery of Art."

Is there any way I can find out more about the company - who was "and co" for instance!!

The catalogue was published in 1892 when Charles Edward Clifford would have been 70, so I imagine more of a "sleeping" partner. I have a letter written by him in 1885 in which the letter-heading of the gallery is just "C E Clifford" so I suppose the company was set up between the two dates.

Many thanks for any advice

Per the Gazette there was a limited company of that name which was wound up in 1924.

My 1902 directory has CE Clifford & Co printsellers at 21 Haymarket

Hello Shaun

Thank you very much for the information - I have found the articles in the Gazette with the date you gave me - that's interesting as Charles died in 1903 and his son, Herbert, who gives his profession as "print seller" on his marriage cert in 1886, died in 1900. Charles' other son, Edward, died in 1910.................. so I wonder who kept the business going until 1924! Is there any way of finding out?

I have just found the following on the National Portrait Gallery site :

C.E. Clifford 1849-1886, artists' colourman 1849-1876, photographic materials manufacturer 1857-1865, picture restorer from 1877; C.E. Clifford & Co from 1887, printsellers; C.E. Clifford & Co Ltd from 1912, fine art publishers, printsellers, framemakers, picture restorers. At 30 Piccadilly, London WC 1848-1887, 12 Piccadilly 1888-1891, 200 Piccadilly 1892-1894, 21 Haymarket 1895-1911, 12 Bury St, St James's from 1912, subsequently moving elsewhere

I don't know where "elswhere" can be!  I'm beginning to think he might have sold the company to someone else as I sure my grandfather didn't take it over - and his estate was used to provide for his dead son's wife and seven children.......

The Wanderer by Herbert Dicksee, it seem that the post I read was the family of the art dealers that published the work. I have been researching the piece for a while but did'nt find anything until I changed the le clifford to ce clifford and the world of info opened up!

Dear Tilly & All

I hope you have managed to find out more information about your grandfather.

I have what appears to be a print which states "London, Published April 2nd, 1888, by C.E.Clifford and Co 12 Piccadilly" and has been stamped by H Wainright and son Ltd of 712 High Road, Tally Ho Corner, North Finchley established 1902.  I think it looks like a print but unsure.  Any advice or information would be greatfully received.

Best regards,

Starmay1 :)

Hello Starmay,

I was very interested to read your post.... the C E Clifford is "my" one, but I think that the company no longer belonged to him in 1888.

I very recently came accross an ad for an auction which was in the Morning Post on the 12th March 1887 (photo attached - at least I would attach one, but I don't seem to be able to do so?? ???).  Some time between 1881 and 1886, he and his family moved to Longfield in Kent and in the 1891 census he is still in Longfield with his daughter Ada and "Living on own means" - I suppose that this is the money made from selling his business.

I recently had a very lucky find on E Bay - one of the paintboxes made by his company (including some original Winsor and Newton paints!)!!

There is quite a lot about C E Clifford if you Google!

Best regards

Tilly
