Hello Tecwyn,
The size of the map is perfect, thank you for all your help. I shall go over to Whitford and see the homes for myself this coming week.
Regards,
Brian

Here is a picture of the grave, found St. Mary's Church, Whitford. Unable to locate their home Tros Y Fron, any ideas?

Searched the old map, but can't find Tros y Fron. It doesn't show much detail of the village itself.

However, having found the family in the 1901 census, it appears that Tros Y Fron was about two properties away from "Fachillt Farm". (assuming that the enumerator walked in a logical fashion!) "Garreg" is also nearby on the census. The next properties along the route were not farms.

You'll see a "Fachallt" on the old map, quite close to Personoliaeth, so I guess Tros y Fron must have been in the same area, along the road to the village.

Hope this helps a bit.

Tecwyn.

A point of passing interest: David Pritchard was a "roadman", as was my grandfather, who lived at Trelogan, a few miles away. They very likely knew one another.

Hello Tecwyn,
Thank you for trying to find Tros Y Fron, like you I followed the known address's from the 1901 census, most are still there, Fachallt Farm, Personaliaeth, Mount [possibly Mount pleasant], but not Tros Y Fron.
I have enjoyed looking around the village and the Church, as well as reading up on the history of the area.
Lost count of the many times that I passed by on the old coast road to North Wales, without knowing it's link to my family.
Regards,
Brian

Driving along the A55 today, on a hunch drove into Whitford, thinking I might find a property with a name that might be a translation of "Tros y Fron". Something like Hillside perhaps. No joy I'm afraid.

However, the first property after passing Fachallt, i.e "Primrose Cottage" would fit the description perfectly, the literal translation of Tros y Fron being "over the hill". It also looks old enough.

I don't know whether individual cottages are detailed on old tithe maps, but It may be worth looking at them at the Archives at Hawarden.

Tecwyn.

Hello Tecwyn,
Thank you for taking that detour off the A55, and having a look around Whitford. I did try knocking on a few doors when I went there, but nowone answered the door.
I had thought Orchard Cottage on the left, after the old post office, might be a good contender, as Tros y Fron is listed twice on the census record, one for each family, and it looks like it may have been made into one.
I hope to get over to the record office at Hawarden, and do a bit more searching in the near future.
Thank you again,
Brian
