EWERS
« on: Saturday 23 October 10 21:30 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am looking for the marriage of Henry Ewers in or near Little Baddow about 1820, wife probably named Mary; also baptism of daughter Mary Ann, born c. 1821. Details not on IGI , Ancestry.com or Findmypast, so any information would be appreciated.

Hi PenJ

I have the same Henry and Mary in my husband's tree, but not Mary Ann. Is she their eldest child?
I too haven't found a marriage, nor Mary's maiden name. My husband's ancestor was their son Charles born 1826.
Would be pleased to share information and hear of your connections.

Cheers
Erika :)

Hi All,
There is a Thomas also;
THOMAS Ewers, Christened 06 February 1825, Little Baddow, Essex to HENRY/MARY
ELIZA Ewers, 14 March 1831, same details.
(Source Familysearch Pilot)

May I ask what Charles M/C has for his Fathers Occp?
Is it possible that Henry is alive in 1851 Census?
I have found one with Sons William/John of right ages but he is a Shoemaker and they are all born Little Baddow.
Could Henrys Occp be wrong in the 1841 Census?
If Henry is not alive have you looked for a Marriage of Mary between 1841-1851?
She is young enough to have remarried.

Trish :)

Hi Erika,
Thanks for quick response.
I'm guessing that Mary Ann was their eldest. She was born c. 1821 & m. James Petchey at Little Baddow  in Oct. 1842. My aunt by marriage is descended from them.
I've found Henry, ag. lab., wife Mary & offspring, inc. your Charles, in  1841 census: here Henry is born c. 1791. I know 1841 ages aren't usually exact, but in 1851 he is a widower born 1780, a shoemaker. Do you have a record of his real age and antecedants?
Have you checked through the parish records for Little Baddow? I'm thinking of looking at them at the SOG in London but if you know already that the record simply isn't there it'd be helpful to know so that I don't waste precious time during my next UK visit!
Regards,
PenJ

Hi PenJ and Trish

I have found these Ewers to be quite a headache! I visited Little Baddow and the surrounding area this summer looking for all the addresses from the census and burials etc, it was quite exciting. I wasn't able to check parish records unfortunately, so haven't found a marriage or any christenings.
Also haven't seen a Thomas Ewers 1825 before!

However the information I have from certs etc is a little patchy.
I have a death cert for a Henry Ewers for 13th December 1854 where it gives his occupation as a Husbandman. The informant is Maria Unwin who if you see on the 1851 census is a neighbour of Henry.
A death cert for Mary Ewers wife of Henry Ewers a labourer is for 9th October 1847 age 48. Henry was the informant of the death in Little Baddow.

Their son Charles Ewers married Elizabeth Unwin daughter of Harry Unwin a labourer on November 15th 1851. Charles gives his father's name as Harry a labourer.
Harry/Henry seemed to be used quite often so am presuming they are one and the same. Charles and Elizabeth had a son named Henry.

There were many Ewers and Unwin families in the Little Baddow area and I am just hoping I have the right connections.

That's about all I can tell you from the information I have so far. Too many similar names ::)

Cheers

Quite a headache ;)
You are lucky to be able to walk in the footsteps of your Ancestors.
I live in Australia so it is a little far for me!

This may fit in somewhere;
Marriage
Mary EWERS
William UNWIN, 1822, Maldon All Saints and St Peter, Essex, England
(Source Familysearch Pilot)

So maybe the Family was inter-twinned before Charles Married  Elizabeth Unwin?

Thanks for that one Trish, haven't gone back any further than Henry yet, so more names to add to the mix ;)

Yes it was lovely to go back to where the ancestors were. It is such a beautiful area and around Little Baddow I don't think much has changed.
My husband's mum was a Ewers and she was born in Hazeleigh not far from Little Baddow and later went to Heybridge and Maldon. We were able to find lots of the original properties still standing. A lovely trip down Memory Lane :)

Cheers

Hi Ronnie

Thank you for taking an interest and looking.
I will add these names to the list to confirm at a later date. There maybe a connection eventually ;)
