Hi MC
What was the person's profession?  Could it be something to do with that?

Cheers

May stand for Poor Law Guardian, i.e. part of management team of a workhouse. Later in the 19th centurary they became Urban or Rural District Councillors.

Would this be someone who looked after the farmer's rent?

Hi,
If you mean the agent of a landlord it is possible. About two thirds of the Guardians were elected by eligible voters and the other third were selected by the local magistrates organisation.
