Buxted Parish Records lookup please
« on: Wednesday 27 October 10 21:41 BST (UK) »
Hello

please would someone who has access to the parish records for Buxted see if they can find out any further information for me on these two brothers?

I have a Samuel Watford, born about 1825 in Buxted, and his brother John Watford (later changed his surname to WHATFORD) born about 1828 in Buxted. I do not know their parents names, and wonder if they had any siblings.

Samuel and John are together on an 1841 census, at Cottage On Railroad, Keymer, Cuckfield Union, Sussex, England, working as agricultural labourers.

Samuel later married a widow named Charlotte DAY (in 1880) - I'm not sure if he was previously married. John married Mary Ann BECK in 1853, and became a Baptist Minister.

Many thanks

Rachel

If your Samuel is the son of Samuel a cordwainer and Sarah he appears to be at home with them in 1841 in Hartfield HO107/1115/6/33 Pg3

Hi

Yes it is possible he was recorded by the family at home, although not actually there but in that case why didn't they put John down? I think you will need to some careful census tracking to make sure there isn't another Samuel Watford of similar age. What other information do you have on samuel which leads you to believe he is the one recorded as Whatford in 1841? Do you have him as definite on later censuses? What about his 1880 marriage - do you have the cert?

Hi Jan
you're right - there are two Samuel Watfords who were born about the same time in the same county (about 1825). I know that John Whatford (he changed his surname spelling to 'Whatford' from 'Watford') was a Baptist Minister, and on an 1891 census he is visiting his brother, Samuel Watford, who by that stage was married to a widow named Charlotte DAY.

I think that the information on the website at http://www.thesussexweald.net/N10.asp?NId=5781953
is incorrect. The person who compiled it says that the Samuel who was married to Esther BURT and visited by his mother on an 1861 census, is the same Samuel who had the Baptist minister brother named John Watford/Whatford.

However, there are two Sussex-born Samuel Watfords on 1891 censuses: The Samuel who was married to Esther BURT, and the Samuel who was married to Charlotte DAY and visited by his brother John.

Confused? I am, haha. I don't have the 1881 marriage cert to prove this Samuel's father's name.

Many thanks
Rachel

Hi Rachel

Looking at the censuses I think Samuel's marriage to Charlotte Day may well be his second one. In 1871 a Samuel Whatford born c1825 is in Ore married to an Eliza with a Charles Burt grandson living with them. Samuel gives his birthplace as Hadlow Sussex, there is a Hadlow Down right next to Buxted. In 1861 Samuel Whatford is born Mayfield, married to Eliza with daughter Esther Burt and widowed mother Sarah. In 1851 Saml Watford doesn't give a birthplace but is living in Ore with Eliza Burt Unmarried plus her daughter Esther. An Eliza Watford died age 62
Hastings District 1879.

The other Samuel born c1825 gives his birthplace consistently as  Laughton 1851-91 his name is always Watford and he is living East Hoathley married to an Eliza throughout, in 1841 he is with parents Samuel and Jemima in East Hoathley.

Jan :)

Hi,

To add a further bit of info for the Samuel from Laughton.
Samuel Watford bap 22 Aug 1824 East Hoathly Parent Samuel (Gardener) and Jemima; Abode: Laughton.

Cannot see a Samuel in the Mayfield, Buxted or Ore Records, the Hadlow Down ones on SFHG dont start till the 1830's so he could be there.
