Edith Annie Marshall's mysterious parents!

Hi,

Can anybody shed any light on these two people?
I have a birth certificate for
Edith Annie Marshall
born on the 22nd March 1872 in Vange (Billericay regisration district).
Her father was given as John Marshall (farm labourer) and her mother as Eliza (formerly Winter).

Eliza registered the birth herself on the 24th April 1872.

However, I suspect that Edith Annie may have been illegitimate. I cannot find any trace of a marriage between the pair, nor can I find them on a census.
There is a John and Eliza Marshall living in Foxearth, Essex. John is a farm labourer, but their daughter, Edith Annie, was born in 1876, and Eliza's maiden name Honeywood and the pair did not marry until 1875.

Can anybody prove me wrong in my assumption?
