McGlynn
« on: Friday 29 October 10 20:28 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am trying to trace the mcglynn branch of my family.  Elizabeth Mcglynn born about 1853 in Bray.  She and her family moved to England when she was young although I don't know when, my grandmother said she worked at Sutton Monastery in St Helens, England from the age of 16.  I can trace her of the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census in St helens but not had much luck prior to that.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Hello again Sheila  :) ( I posted earlier re your Gallaghers)

Is your Elizabeth the one who boards with Joseph Earnshaw in 1891?

Is McGlynn her birth name?

regards
heywood

Hi, heywood, thanks for your replys, my Elizabeth was living with a Joseph Appleton on the 1891 census and yes I think McGlynn was her birth name.  I don't think she ever married.

Hello again,

apologies, I don't know where I got Earnshaw from! I saw her with Joseph Appleton in 1901 later and it didn't click with me.
It is difficult as she is difficult to find before 1891 as you say and this is all I can think of at the moment.
Do you have birth certificates for any of the children? That might inform re her name if you are unsure, although she states single in 1891 and I can't see a marriage for her to Joseph can you?
You will have seen the couple Michael and elizabeth McGlynn in Parr also. They are Glynn in 1881 and there is a James McGlynn then too.
There are others too born Ireland but sadly no Elizabeth there.
These families may be connected perhaps?
Another possibility to get a wider picture is to find baptism records for the children. The godparents may give clues re any extended relationships.

Hello Heywwod, I have the birth certificates for 3 of her children and there is no fathers name recorded and their baptismal records have only the mother Elizabeth Glynn for 2 children and the 3rd and last born shows Elizabeth and Joseph Glynn.  Sponser for all three was Anna Dunne but I have not been able to connect her as yet, still trying to trace her.

Hi

Do you know the name of either parent of Elizabeth?
Alternatively, the names of her children might provide a clue.

I ask that as there was an Elizabeth McGlynn baptised in St Andrews Church, Dublin in 1851.  Her parents were James and Isabella.

Cheers

This is very difficult.  :(
You have already searched the places I could think of - baptismal records- where you might get some clues.
With regard to Anne Dunne - I wonder if this is her?

1881 RG11; Piece: 3738; Folio: 64; Page: 29

Anne Dunne b 1838 Ireland married (no husband shown) and a son Charles.
She is a couple of census entries away from Joseph Appleton and his family.

She is here in 1871 RG10; Piece: 3866; Folio: 53; Page: 20
in same place with son Charles - still married but no husband there.

I can't see a birth for Charles in Prescot district  :-\

It is looking increasingly unlikely that Elizabeth was in England from a young age - if so she should be in 1871/81  censuses you would think  ??? However, why would the story re Sutton monastery be in the family?
