James Kelly, Westmeath
« on: Friday 29 October 10 21:33 BST (UK) »
My own family are all from Wexford Town but my cousins wife has just found that her gt.gt.grandfather was from Westmeath.  He was James Kelly, born 1840 but moved to St Helens, Lancashire and married Ann Dayley in August 1866.  This is new territory for me.  Can anyone help.  Anne

Anne, sorry that I can't help but I would be very interested to see what advice you receive.  I also have Kelly's from Westmeath (Mullingar) who moved to St Helens at a later date than yours, which I look forward to researching.

BTW,  the St Helens marriage records show:
8 12 1866   James   KELLY   Ann   DAYLEY   St Mary's (Lowe House) RC.  That's 8 December 1866, not August.

Thanks Kit for letting me know it was December not August.  Funny thing is, I now live in St Helens and have passed the street where James kelly lived many times without realizing the connection.  The great thing about sites like these is all the bits of information that gradualy fit together.

If you don't already have it, you should purchase the marriage cert -  Q4 1866 Prescot 8b 1020.  If you don't already know his father's name and occupation, that'll help.  Having already done research in Wexford, you've probably already tried the Griffiths Valuation http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php

Although I haven't yet been in a position to progress my research with a trip to Ireland, I certainly intend to contact Mullingar Library to see what records they may have or what advice they can offer.

Thanks again Kit for your suggestions.  I will pass them on to my cousin as he lives not far from the registry office at Prescot.  Hopefully it may give a little more information than just Westmeath.  It could be just the kick start needed to trace back another generation. Anne

Hi Jack.  I am a little puzzled when you say James Kelly  Liverpool-Wexford.  Is that because of my reference to my family in Wexford.  As far as I know James was from Westmeath.
