Thanks Janette and Althea.

I've emailed local branch NZSG for Wint, but it would be a good idea for her (!!) to email local council as well.  ;D

Here is reply from very helpful contact at local NZSG

Daniel Sandbrook d 27/10/1921 Buried Taumarunui Old Cemetery COE 4  plot 26
Born Wales Died Matiere (Not far from Ohura)
Occupation -Roadman
Residence- ToRapuna
Age 70 years
No Headstone.
Reference: Taumarunui Old Cemetery Burial register

Strange for a retired draper to become a 'roadman' in King Country, but perhaps he just wanted some peace and quiet in a rural district.

Hope this helps, Wint.  :)

Was he with family or not, are they still at Devonport???

Thanks a lot for all the info, the plot thickens. Daniel Sandbrook came from a wealthy farming family in Pembrokeshire Wales. He married his wife in Yorkshire where he owned a very successful business and all his older children attended private school. He retired in 1910 at the age of 59 and emigrated in 1911. Would he have needed a healthy bank balance to enter NZ? Sounds as there might have a family rift as his wife was still living in Devonport in 1926 albeit at a different address.
The pic John B is my grandfather who was Daniel Sandbrook's nephew.
Once again many thanks it's much appreciated

Hi John,I wonder if ToRapuna was supposed to be Takapuna which is the suburb next to Devonport in Auckland'

Cheers Janette

Hi Janette,
Excellent thought - that's why two heads are always better than one  ;D

I had wondered about ToRopuna and tried several options - but not Takapuna ! But that could easily be the source if it was from a handwritten document.

But Occupation 'Roadman' still a mystery  ???

I'll make further enquiries

His daughter Ruby married Roderick Herdman, don't think they had any children so probably no descendants. Am actually intrigued by his profession as a Roadman - what would that entail? Seems a little old for doing anything too strenuous particularly as he seemed to live a seemingly comfortable life in England

How strange thought still at 70 to be working on roads ??he enjoyed ordinary life that NZ offered???
Maybe there is a death notice in NZ Herald

Yes, still some unanswered questions here  :D

As Althea mentioned in reply above, it would be interesting to learn details recorded on death printout - especially cause of death.

NZ Herald death notices for that date not yet available from North Shore group, and not yet on Paperspast.

There is a reference to his trip from UK to NZ in 1911 at Archway, but I don't imagine it would tell us anything new, although why is it mentioned there at all  ???
