5th Fusiliers

I have an ancestor who was a sergeant in the 5th Fusiliers (1st battalion) in the 1860s. He spent a short time in India but was mainly based in Curragh Camp in Ireland.

I was wondering if anyone knew what became of the 5th Fusiliers because there seems to be so many variations e.g. Northumberlands, The Royal Fusiliers, City of London etc etc. I am totally confused. Wikipedia just made it worse.

The 5th Fusiliers was a shortened version of the 5th Regiment of Foot (Northumberland Fusiliers) - their title from 1836 to 1881. They had a second battalion a number of times, and from 1857 in your period.

I have a 4 page document which I got from FindMyPast which stated:

Sgt Edward Ryall
1 / 5th Fusiliers
Invalided / pensioned out due to ill health in 1865.
born 1834 Somerset and joined up in Dublin in 1858.
His commanding officer was Colonel Masters

hi my ggrandfather thomas williams was with 1st battalion 5th reg northumberland fusiliers, he joined in liverpool 1860, in 1861 they were at st botolphs colchester,they were in curragh around 1865 then left for india 1867, my ggrandfather returned home 1879 but rest of regiment left a year later, they were involved in 2nd anglo afghan war, hope this helps,

According to the Times Digital Archive in Mar 1865, HMS Urgent took seven companies of the 5th Fusiliers from Woolwich to Dublin.

Acording to the Times in August 1866 the Essex and the Sussex sailed from Ireland to India
