Johns Burial (husband of Hannah);
16 December 1875, Cuckfield, Age 71, Birth 1804

Hi Trish
Just wondering how you can be sure this is Hannah's husband.  It does seem very likely but the occupation given in the cemetery burial register is "thatcher" whereas he appears to be an ag lab in all the census.  That is what made me put a caveat when I gave it earlier.  Do you have another source of information?  Does the church register say husband of Hannah for instance?
Andrea

Hi Andrea,
I may have made a mistake but I chose it for logical (well to me!) reasons;
The Age was right.
John born c 1804 does not appear on the 1881 Census.
The other John Ede born c 1808 seems to be still alive in 1881 in the Maidstone Union Workhouse in Kent.
There is another Burial for a John Ede 03 March 1871, No age given , but I am pretty sure he would not appear on the 1871 Census which John 1804 does.

No I do not have access to the actual Parish Records so I could be completely wrong. :-\

Trish :)

It is just that in 1851 in Cuckfield there are two John Edes both born Cuckfield.  One age 45 and one 47.  Both ag labs.  I am also sure I saw another couple having children in the baptism registers.  Will have to check that.  John and Ann in the 1851 census and of course Ann and Hannah are often interchangeable.
Potential for muddle!  For example there is a 12 year old John with John and Ann in 1851 - possibly the baptism you found?  An 11 year old John with John and Hannah!
When I have a moment I will look at the church register more closely.

Everything comes to she who looks!   Ellen's father at marriage is John Ede, thatcher!  Spouse Samuel is a Private RE training??   Both signed.  Father Samuel Newell is a tailor.  Witnesses William Ede and Charlotte Botting - both made their mark.
