William DOHERTY
« on: Monday 01 November 10 03:15 GMT (UK) »
Looking for a baptism (and parents) for William Doherty who was born on 8 August 1833, in Ballymacwilliam, Edenderry.

Unable to state who William's parents were except to say that his Father may also have been a William (according to informant on his death certificate).  Also, he is not connected to the Doherty's at Jonestown as recorded in Griffith's.  He was married in Emerald Hill, Victoria, Australia but his marriage does not appear on register.

Doherty was a Police Constable with the Dublin Metropolitan Police prior to going to Australia in 1857, upon arrival he joined Victoria Police.  The archives from the Garda and Victoria Police both confirm same date of birth and birth place.

Any help, very greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Janet.

what religion ?

once you know this you can check which parish covers the Ballymacwilliam/Edenderry area, what records are available for the dates you need (if any) - and where these can be accessed.

Hi Shane,

Thanks for your reply, the religion is Roman Catholic.

Edenderry town around some of the surrounding area and in the RC parish of Edenderry and are available on microfilm  Pos. 4207 in the National Library, and go back to about 1820 for baptisms and marriages.

Ballymacwilliam seems to be in a different parish...

Balymacwilliam is in the Civil parish of the same name and RC parish of Rhode. Film Pos. 4205 - includes baptisms and marriages for this parish  back to 1829 with gaps.

see :  Rhode RC parish (Irish Times)

RC records for both Rhode and Edenderry are included in the list of sources available (as transcripts) on the pay-website of the Irish Family History Foundation - http://www.rootsireland.ie

Hi Shane,

Many thanks once again for your reply.  Sorry to say that I have already tried the IFHF website under various spellings of Doherty without any success.

Cheers,

Janet.
