Surname Aldworth Co. Cork
« on: Monday 01 November 10 12:18 GMT (UK) »
I have found a Jane Aldworth born about 1826 in County Cork, who later marries Alexander Dorrian and has two sons John (b. 1868 Co. Monhagan) and Patrick (b. 1871 Co. Monhagan).

She died in 1910 in Ballygawley Co. Down, where he and her husband ran the local post office. Jane was a catholic.

My query is that Aldworth seems a very anglicised and unusual name for Ireland at this period.

I have not traced her actual marriage so do not know what her father's name was.

Can anyone offer any help and suggestions?

Thanks

Amy

you can search RC parish records for parts of Co. Cork online (south east county and parts of the city) on www.irishgenealogy.ie

There are quite a number of Aldworth records listed on the site -  most seem to be in Co. Kerry

One of the first Aldworth's in Co.Cork was Sir Richard Aldworth who's family were originally from Berkshire, England  and he was in charge of the "Plantation of Clanawley" were the lands were settled by twenty families of English birth in December 1614. Which was the Plantation of the McAuliffe Clan land around Newmarket, Co.Cork my ancestors land. The Aldworth's were also in Doneraile and other parts of Cork but were all close related. Also those in Kerry likewise. (There is a village called Aldworth in Berkshire the surname origins most likely come from there)

Sir Richard Aldworth was a Provost Marshall of the Crown forces of Munster.

My understanding is that most Aldworth's in Munster area stem from this family.
