Macdonald of Uig
« on: Monday 01 November 10 23:13 GMT (UK) »
I have my great great uncles birth certificate but can't add any information to it.
He was born Angus Macdonald  8 Sep 1862 Carloway parish of Uig to Angus Macdonald, blacksmith and Euphemia Morrison married Dec 1851 Uig .
His brother was William Macdonald.   They moved to Canada.  William married Catherine McKenizie in Goderich, Ontario.  She died in 1898 and left her two small daughter's alone.  One went to her maternal grandmother and the other to an aunt.  When the girls were in their late teens they moved to Saskatchewan to live with their Uncle Angus and Aunt Kate.  There were other cousins and relatives living there too.
I can't find any information on Angus to tell me where he lived or who he married.   Nor can I find anything about his parents.
Thanks for any information you may add.

How sure are you of the marriage date for Euphemia and Angus? Has this info come from one of the children's birth certs? Angus McDonald shows in the earlier censuses with a wife called Henrietta:

1851:

Angus McDonald 23, blacksmith b. Lochs
Henrietta McDonald 27 b. Uig

Address: Dalbeg, Dalmore, Lochs

1861:

Angus McDonald 34, blacksmith b. Dalmore
Henrietta McDonald   36
Donald McDonald 9
Isabella McDonald 7
Mary McDonald 5
Margret McDonald 1
Mary Bell Mciver 14, boarder

Address:    20 xxx Lochs

Father Angus and children look to have arrived in Quebec on the 'Andrew' on 29 Jul 1872:

Angus, occupation tanner, 44
Donald, 20
Isabella, 19
Mary 15
Marg., 11
Angus, 7
John, 5
Wm., 3
Infant, (can't read very well this bit).

The family look to be living in Goderich, Huron Centre, Ontario for the 1881 census. Looks like Angus father has remarried, wife called Ann, b. Scotland. The chidlren all show in the household. www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

Possible entry for brother Angus on the 1901 Canadian census in Lindsay, Bruce Ontario:

Angus Mcdonald 38, farmer b. Scotland (birth showing as 10 Sept 1862. Migration year looks wrong, 1863)
Kettie Mcdonald 40
John Mcdonald 11
Daniel Mcdonald 10
Alex Mcdonald 7
M Margret Mcdonald 5
C Anni E Mcdonald 3
Effie Mcdonald 2/12

Is it your family tree for William on Ancestry? Hopefully so and you can view the original image  :)

Thanks Monica
Yes.  I just found that myself and the ship they sailed on in 1872 from Glasgow to Quebec City.  Euphemia must have died in childbirth as she is not listed but an infant is.  Now to find out where they all scattered in North America.  I also found my great great grandfather's birth registry, which is wonderful.

Can I give you a suggestion on the Canadian side. We have really knowledgeable RootsChatters with experience on the Canadian side and resources available there which would help you to try and unravel the family following their arrival in Canada, see this board www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,166.0.html

Why don't you put a post on there, with a link to this one for background and so that people don't repeat any searches.

I'm not clear in my head why records for Angus Snr's wife jump from Henrietta to Euphemia...but my brain is too tired now to think straight  ;D I'll have a look again in the morning.

Did the marriage date for Euphemia and Angus of Jan 1851 come from either Angus Jnr or William's birth certs?

Hi Allan

Just looking again at some of the info from yesterday.

I don't think that 1901 entry I posted for an Angus and Kate McDonald is correct. There is a likely marriage for them in Bruce Co. in March 1888 where an Angus and a Catherine McLeod married. His parents show as John McDonald and Annie McLay which also fits with first born son being called John.

I have though found three marriages for the McDonald girls:

Mary McDonald and John Smith - 30 Jan 1877, Huron
Isabella McDonald and Neil McKay - 11 Sept 1878, Huron
Margaret McDonald and Andrew Alexander - 15 Jan 1885, Huron

Mother's name in all three entries shows as Euphemia/Effy Morrison.
