Mrs Gwendolyn[e] S SANDERS is listed on the Voters Rolls of 1939 and 1940 at 230 Central Ave - Saleslady. Husband doesn't seem to be there.

Wow, Kris, you are absolutely amazing to have found all this useful information!  I can't believe how much you found in such a short time.  Many thanks also to diveboy and Merlin for your contributions.

Kris, in the death notice of Gwen's father, Herbert Charles Richardson (Argus, 20 Nov 1925), she is listed as "Gwen (Mrs G. S. Porter, America)."  The notice was quite difficult to read and, while I am sure that the initials were given as G.S., I know from the information you found that her husband's name was Thomas Alfred Porter.

Could I ask one more favour Kris?  Could you check for the arrival of Gwen and Eileen's maternal grandfather in Australia?  His name was William Shaw MADDEN, who was baptised on 4 Sep 1831 at Stradbally, Queen's County, Ireland.  His parents were William Ryves Madden and Mary Anne Shaw.  I found him at Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge in 1849, and the next sighting I have of him is as a trooper in Melbourne in Nov 1854 (when he appeared in the Supreme Court regarding the theft of his watch from the Melbourne Barracks), so he arrived in Australia some time between 1849 and 1854.  He was then living in Launceston where he married Eliza Atkinson (6 Jun 1857), had a daughter, Mary Grace (17 Apr 1858) and died (29 Jul 1858), all in very quick succession!

Thanks for all your help
Dean :)

Hi Dean,

Looking at this I think the initials are Gwens "Gwen" Mrs G S PORTER = Gwendolyn Shaw PORTER.

Cheers Kris  :)

You are so right Kris about the initials being Gwen's.  I don't know why I never thought of this!

Thanks Alison for the Atkinson family names.  As I spotted William Shaw Madden in Melbourne in 1854 (before he settled in Tasmania), I wonder whether he might have arrived in Melbourne?

And thanks Sue for the burial information, which I did not have.

ALAN H. GEDDES put a notice of thanks in the public notices of the ARGUS in 1944 for gestures of kindness etc. following his recent loss.....etc.

From it you will get his address at that time.
