Smith family in Alderney.
« on: Monday 04 October 10 19:46 BST (UK) »
I am a little new to this but here goes!

My Great Great Grandfather was (apparently!) born in Alderney in 1818 - his name was Jonathan William SMITH.

His father was Samuel SMITH who was born in Alderney (I think) in 1752 and he died in 1827.

I have information that he married Elizabeth SWEET on 27 October 1787 in Alderney and she was the daughter of Jonathan SWEET and Elizabeth STONE.

Samuel SMITH was apparently a sailor on the Governor's cutter.

I cannot prove any of this and was wondering if anyone on this site could help me.

Thanks in anticipation.

Chris.

Unfortunately there are only census records on Ancestry for the \Channel Isles. There are no Free BMD records on line as I found when I was searching for ancestors in Guernsey. In the end we took a short break to St Peter Port and went to the record office which I know have the Alderney records.

to ck burke I am also researching smiths and j.w.smith is my greatgrandfather. He was born on alderney( I have seen the entry in the parish register. He was the only son of Samuel and elizabeth nee wesley, samuel born 28.12.1788 d.1827 bristol. He was the son of Samuel b. 1752 who was the son of Edward of North Yarmouth no dates I am afraid. I have more info if this would be helpful.
Good luck

Hi hibakusha

So you must be the grandson of either Augusta, Bertha, Walter or Stella Smith.

My great grandfather was William Samuel Valentine England Smith.

I would be very grateful for any further information.

Perhaps I could give you my email address and share what I have.

Chris.

New members usually need 2/3 posts to be able to use PM (personal message) system to share information such as emails, address, recent family details, etc. which are not allowed to be posted on the boards.

Hi hibakusha

Hope you got the new post.

One of the sons of my great grandfather emigrated to Canada.

I am now in touch with his grandchildren.

Chris.
