Any Resources - SCANLON
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 16:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am need of any information relating to my Great Grandfather. Any information is useful information because I have come to a halt in my research and I think I need a bit of help to get me onto the next stage of my research. Here is some information that I know about him:

Name: Michael Scanlon
Birth: about 1887 in County Kerry, Ireland
Death: about 1981 in County Kerry, Ireland
Occupation: 24 November 1951 = General Labourer
Spouse: Mary Clark
Children:
John
Maurice
Mary Mercedes
Peter (middle name paul)

Like I said anything will help,
thankyou so much for your time!

It would probably be a good idea to start by searching for the marriage of Michael and Mary, as a cert for this will show their father's name and provide clues for further searches.

Do you know when/where they married or have approximate date and place of birth for their eldest child ?  (knowing this should help down the search)

see : Introduction to Irish Records

The online version of the civil index covers up to 1958.

Many parish records for Co. Kerry are available online at : www.irishgenealogy.ie

any idea of what part of Kerry the family lived ?
There are many Scanlon families in Kerry so knowing which part could help narrow down the correct family..

Peter

If you haven't got the marriage cert for Michael Scanlon and Mary Clark there are two entries on the Irish civil registration Index that match
Mary Clarke
Marriage Jun Mar 1918
Dingle registration district Vol 5/168
These details match an entry for the marriage of Michael Scanlon so it is probable that it is the marriage record you may want.
You can order a cert by going to www.groireland.ie - It cost less to get a photocopy of the entry in the register and you will get the same information as on a full certificate.

Did you find him anywhere on 1911 census? It might help narrow down what part of Kerry he was in.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0aa5/  shows 4 possibles of his age. Maybe you could match him by siblings?
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

There are a number of entries for John, Maurice and Peter Scanlon in the Dingle registration district after 1918 - but  indentifying  the correct one is difficult you may have to order a number of cert -its all a bit of a lucky dip!!

The entry that is puzzling is the for Mary Mercedes Scanlon Dingle Reg. district Jul - Sep 1947 vol 5 page 179. I would have thought this might be a bit late for even the youngest member of that family but the second name is uncommon and it is the only Mary Mercedes that showed up on the index.
Hope this is of help

are you same person who has family tree on ancestry ?
if so the ww1 record is not your michael scanlon as he married brigid moriarty 1919 tralee two children mary bridget 1920 michael joseph 1922 born tralee from ww1 record .

other info fits besides ww1 record . wifes name and kids names correct .

from tree . mary mercedes scanlon 1918-23 april 1953
Mary Mercedes Scanlon marriage Dingle Reg. district Jul - Sep 1947 vol 5 page 179.
spouse last name cloke

peter paul scanlon 30 june 1922 dingle 18 nov 2009 blackpool england .
wifes surname doolan

from tree has michael scanlons parents as john scanlon and julia griffin born lixnaw .
michaels real birth is 16 nov 1887 emlagh to john scanlon and julia griffin .

the michael scanlon ww1 father and mother is john scanlon and mary ware , born lixnaw 21 aug 1887 . WRONG couple

births here

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0aa7/

tree  has correct parents wrong birthplace lixnaw .
would be worth looking at as you can contact tree owner .

the marriage of michael scanlon mary clarke
dingle kerry marriages jun-mar 1918 vol 5 page 168 .
the Mary Mercedes Scanlon marriage from above .
can be ordered from roscommon GRO . 8 euros .
if you give parents name and dingle kerry and 4 childrens names and rough dates they will search for the four births for you and only charge for certs they find . they charge 2 euros to search some times just 2 euros others 8 for all four searches .
they then charge 4 euros for each cert found as a photo copy of entry .

good luck

Oops!!

From Obbies information - it looks like I made a major error in posting the 1947 entry for Mary Mercedes Scanlon as a birth when it should have been a marriage. My apologies.
