Church name?
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 20:08 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone make out the name of this church  ???

As a bit of help, the GRO reference is for Portsea, the groom is George Ferguson and his bride is Elizabeth Edwards.  I can make out Martha Jane Williams as a witness and Mark Anthony Jacks.

If the professions of the fathers can be made out, that would be a real bonus.  I think the groom is a corporal in the army service corps.

It looks like St Mark to me ... the top right hand paragraph here confirms that there was such a church http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/40632/pages/6439/page.pdf
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Tempted to agree with Geoff, but the handwriting is so awful it's hard to be sure.

There's a useful list of Portsea churches here:

Just looked on family search and the church is listed as St Marys, Portsea.

This is the link to the marriage entry;

Thank you all - the certificate has been a real b***er to read  ;)

This has to be the worst certificate we've had, and we've accumulated hundreds.  Even bachelor and spinster are only partly written out.  The groom's father we had thought was deceased by the time of the wedding, but we have yet to prove that.  At the last census entry for him in 1861, he was a Chelsea Pensioner, pensioned out suffering from CPD.  This line in the family tree has a strong military presence.  Bumboater or Pawnbroker (whatever he could do to earn money?) - could be either, the writing is atrocious.  As for the bride's father, he was indeed a tailor on his last census entry.

There was a St Mark's Church in Portsea, at North End, established in 1874.  St Mary's was the original parish, although it was rebuilt twice in the 19th century.

George was born in 1846 in the Newport area of the Isle of Wight.  His father Henry seems to have been born in Ireland - is that right?.  Might it say Bomdardier?
