does any one have any info on a Benjamin smith elms  b 1817 d 1875
he was head of the police in shepton mallet abt 1835

Hi

1851 census has him in the police station at Chard with his wife Eliza and 2 children.  He is listed as a Superintendent Of Police.  It states he was born at 'Card Magna, somerset in 1819.

1861 similar but he is not at the police station.  This one states he was born at Chew Magna, so the first one may be wrongly transcribed.

1871 similar but he is now a Sergeant of constabulary and lives in the police station at Shepton Mallet, 1 prisoner also listed.

All listings for him are Benjamin Elms, no mention of 'Smith'

Siblings baptised there are as follows:

07/11/1813 Sophia, daughter of James and Frances Elmes, Chew Magna, Butcher.
04/04/1819 Mary Ann Elmes, daughter of James and Frances Elmes, Chew Magna, Butcher.

There may be more as there are very many Elms/Elmes etc people on Freereg.

There is a marriage on 25/08/1809 Chew Magna, James Elmes to Francis Smith. Francis shown  "of Brislington".

Witnesses were Joseph Smith and Mary ??

There should be more children for them somewhere.
