Akira,

You will see from my list of names etc. below that I have Gardiners in my tree and many years ago I was told that about a quarter of the populatioin in the Stroud/Bisley area had the name or variant.

I spent hours searching church registers etc for Gardiners etc. and I've checked my notes to find:-

Henry Edward Horwood son of Thomas and Elizabeth Gardner baptized Aug 14 1789.  This information was copied from Stroud Bishop's Transcripts shown on LDS film 0427784.

The surname Horwood is to be found in quite a few register entries so perhaps it was the maiden name of Henry's mother - that sort of naming let to many double barrelled surnames.

Regards

Chas

Hi Chas,

Thanks for the reply, thats very interesting, but it explains why he's hard to track down records for you just have to know what your looking for.

Double barreled surnames does this mean his family was wealthy as thats not common with working class.

Cheers

Akira

Hi all, Chas,

How do you get access to the Stroud Bishops Transcripts?

to Confirm other information like the parents and marriage.

Cheers

Hi All,

Tried doing a search on the 1861 census for Henry Gardner and still haven't been able to find him not sure whether Elizabeth is alive.

I know Henry died in 1870 so he won't be on the 1871 census

Cheers

Akira

Akira,

If you go to https://beta.familysearch.org/ you will see "Library Catalog"

In the catalogue you will find that the LDS has millions - literally- of films one can hire and search at any LDS FHC - see https://film.familysearch.org/ for details of hire.

Regards

Chas

P.S. "Stone breaker" probably means just that, breaking up stone for use on roads or whatever.

P.P.S.  Double barrelled surnames do not mean "Rich" :D but it might mean snob!!
