Hi sasi,

welcome to RootsChat.

It might be a good idea to try and attach a small scan of the original documents these references came from as they don't match anything well-known and might be mistransciptions.

I can't imagine what the second one might be, but have you tried Etruria for the first?  It's somewhere between Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The birthplaces seem to come from the 1861 and 1871 Welsh censuses (Mary ROBERTS, b. c1816, wife of John), and the images are quite clear...  ???

If I have the right family, in 1851 and 1881 she gives her place of birth as Brymbo, Denbighshire, where the family is living - a confusing lady!

Do you know Mary's maiden name and her father's name?

Tutbury Castle????     :-\

She might be tricky to find without  little more info, so if/when funds permit, I would suggest getting a birth cert for one of her children, as that will give you her maiden name - we could then look for her marriage to John, and the marriage cert would give her father's name and occupation.

In the meantime, maybe someone will have a stroke of genius concerning the place names: I imagine they are a phonetic transcription of what John (or the enumerator) thought he heard when Mary told him her birthplace, but goodness knows what they were meant to be!

A long shot; at first glance I read Scoria as Scotia. Scotia Road runs south of Tunstall. Is it possible 'Tantalee' could be Bentilee? Both are within Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.
