Newport Union Workhouse
« on: Tuesday 09 November 10 15:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am trying to trace my great grandma who was in the Newport Union Workhouse in 1899 when my grandma was born on the 29th September 1899, my grandma was named Ethel Winifred Rogers and her mother was Laura Rogers, I cannot find where my great grandma Laura went after leaving the workhouse, whether she married or when she died.  My grandma, Ethel married a George Hobbs of Chepstow on the 15th May 1920.  If anyone can help with any census records or marriage or death records of my great grandma Laura, it would be appreciated.  There is no father named on the birth certificate for my grandma Ethel but my grandma named her father on her marriage certificate as William Rogers!  Any help would be great.  Kind regards Julie

In 1901 there was a Laura Rogers the right age b Hereford working as a servant in Leyton, Essex for John Black, foreign correspondent, and family

ethel is with her grandparents Edwin and Emily in 1901 - so think this is Laura in her family context in 1881, in Ewyas Harold, Herefordshire.

Edwin Rogers    38 - gamekeeper b Grosmont, Mons
Emma Rogers    38 - Herefordshire, shipeck [?]
Sydney Rogers    15 - b Grosmont, Mons
Etheldra Rogers    13 - b Kentchurch
Emily Rogers    11 - b Kentchurch
Laura Rogers    9 - b Kentchurch
Elizth. Rogers    7 - b Ewyas Harold
Alfred Rogers    5  - b Ewyas Harold
Clara Rogers    3  - b Ewyas Harold
Wm. Rogers    1  - b Ewyas Harold

Thanks Mabel much appreciated.  I cannot find when my great grandma Laura Rogers passed away nor when or if she married, neither do i know who Ethel's dad was?
Not sure if you are able to find this information but would be very much appreciated

Kind regards Julie

One suggestion - but you'd need certificates to check

Laura A Rogers
Spouse Ernest J Leonard
Q1 1921
Newport Market, vol 11a  p611

Laura A Leonard
death registered Q2 1941, Newport Vol 11a p347
Age at Death:    69

Marriage certificate would name her father.

I think it would be quite difficult to identify Ethel's father
