A WW1 query- Royal Engineers
« on: Wednesday 10 November 10 12:44 GMT (UK) »
I have two queries. First one I am trying to find out more regarding my Grandfather who served with the Royal Engineers during WW1. He ended up in S.Africa after the war but I don't know if he served there or not.  His name was Ernest C Dunn b.1895, Blackpool, Lancs

Dunn, Cort Dunn - Blackburn, England, Rhodesia
Shrager - Ceylon, Singapore, Calcutta, India

There are six medal index cards for Ernest Dunns who served in the Royal Engineers, but none has 'C' as second initial.
Ancestry is offering free searches of British WW1 soldiers' records this week - you may find him there.
Do you have his medals?  They should have a number stamped into the rim or back, with his name and RE.

Hi Ainslie
Thanks for your prompt reply. Unfortunately I have no more information, just an excerpt written about him in later life. See below. Where did you find the medal cards. do you have an url?

The Medal Index Cards are available via the National Archives, where it costs £2 to view the image:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/browse-refine.asp?CatID=10&searchType=browserefine&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1

You may not need all that link  - try as far as online/

They are also available free to subscribers on Ancestry where you get an image of both sides of the card, though there is seldom anything on the reverse.  You will get a note dof what campaign medals were awarded, or on the NA version , not via Ancestry, the bare fact of any gallantry award which will usually be on a separate card.
Someone has been busy searching for ECD on various sites - you perhaps?
