Crediton - WESTLAKE
« on: Thursday 11 November 10 18:19 GMT (UK) »
I have just traced my Westlake family back to Crediton - George, son of Richard and Ann born there c 1776.
There is quite a lot of information on family search - almost too much!

I am writing in the hope that I find someone who knows a bit about Crediton parish records and can help me disentangle my family there - alternatively someone who just likes a bit of a puzzle

My George was christened on 26 May 1776 son of Richard and Ann
However there are two Richard and Anns - of similar age and married in the same year.

Richard (1) was christened in 1752 - son of George and Mary (I favour this one for my family as I have a George born in 1776 and also a Mary born in 1775)
Richard (2) was christened in 1756 - son of William and Sarah (it is likely they were cousins as William as these are also family names.

The two possible marraiges are
Rciahrd Westlake and (A) Ann Melhuish on 2 MAr 1774
Richard Westlake and (B) ANn Mineard on 15 MAy 1774

To make things even more complicated there are three possible Ann Melhuishes -
(A1) born 1746 - daughter of JOhn and Elizabeth
(A2) born 1752 daughter of JAmes and Susannah
(A3) born 1754 daughter of John and Grace

There is only one Ann Mineard (thank goodness) born in 1746

There are a number of children with these names with parents Richard and Ann but I cannot tell which family.

Any ideas? Or anyone with access to parish reocrds which might provide a few more clues?

Grateful for any suggestions
A muddled lizb

I realise some time has passed since you posted this, lizb, but I'm hoping you or someone else has come up with an answer!

I have just traced one of my family lines back to this point.  I am descended from Mary Westlake, baptised 3 April 1791 in Crediton, daughter of Richard and Ann.  Mary married John Moore in 1813 and had children: Sally, John, James, Sally, William, George, Richard, Henry and Fanny.  I'm wondering if the fact they named 2 daughters Sally (the first died as an infant) links Mary to grandmother Sarah - or am I clutching at straws?
Researching:
Waycott, Fewings, Piper, Burgoyne, Johns, Phillips, Paddon, Streat;
Morrish, Rowdon, Pike, Lowder, Flood, Parsons and others.
All in glorious Devon!
