Got any dates?

There's a William Infield Jordan born Stow Hunts in 1898 in the 1901 census. Is this him? I can't see any WW1 service records for him, at least not with a middle name Infield.

His son's service records won't be online - see http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html for how to obtain them

William Infield Jordan's death index in Huntingdon RD ref 9/1205 in March quarter 1978 records his birth as 13 July 1897.

Hugh Reuben Jordan's death index in Huntingdon 333/1C Dec quarter 2004 at age 78 confirms his date of birth as 31 Dec 1926. His birth was registered in St Neots RD & mother's maiden name was Deighton.

Was there any family where a William wasn't known as Bill?

I've found his service records now though, on Ancestry, shown as William Ingfield Jordan. There are 18 pages, plus 15 in another entry, which may be duplicated. Your best bet to view these is to go to your nearest library which has a library subscription to Ancestry (or take out a free trial subscription to Ancestry, but don't forget to cancel it before the 14 day period is up!).

He enlisted on 9 Dec 1914 in the Hunts Cycle Battalion, age 17, of New Cottage, Kimbolton Station, Hunts, birthplace Stow Longa, father Samuel, and stayed in England until Aug 1916 when he was transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and posted, and was compulsorily transferred to the Tank Corps in Dec 1917. He was discharged on 31 March 1920. He was in hospital for 3 months from 5 June 1917 with boils (perhaps he didn't sit straight on his cycle saddle!)

I've just found his medal card from his regimental no 1090 with the Hunts Cycl Bn - under William J Jordon. This no was 32062 while he was in the Royal Warwicks and no 304576 while in the Tank Corps.

He got the Victory & British medals.

Interestingly, I found William Infield Jordan & son Hugh Reuben in a tree I have access to on Genes Reunited because somehow I have a tenuous link to another person in that tree. According to her tree William's father Samuel Jordan born 1873 was son of Jabez Jordan & Sarah Infield. The Infield line is tracked back to John Jordan born circa 1650 Bedford.

cheers John
