george jasper nicholls
« on: Friday 12 November 10 18:37 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any info on George Jasper Nicholls, born 1841 in Cornwall, he had a long career in the Indian Civil service from 1860's-1890's, when he retires back to England. He had various jobs according to Indian Civil service list, including a judge. he married Joanna Landsey in London in 1877 shortly before he returned again to India, I beleive she must have gone with him as I cannot find any further records for her in the UK. When George finally comes back to Devon in late 1890's he has another wife Caroline, born in India, with him, plus two children. I have no idea how or where to start with Indian records, or if indeed there are any that would help me.
what i am really hoping to find, is what happened to Joanna and if they had any children. Sorry if this rambles on, but relly hope someone can help me out !

Pilot Familysearch has the marriage to Caroline, 4 Oct 1886 at Benares, he was 45 she 21.

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

The births of two children are there as well, 1887 and 1892, with Caroline the mother.

The births of  two children  were announced in the  Royal Cornwall Gazette (Oct 21 1887 and March 17 1892)

In 1887 (birth of a daughter at Ghazipur on 21 September) he is described as "Bengal Civil Service"

In 1892 (birth of a son February 12 at Benares) he is "barrister-at-law Bengal Civil Service, District and Sessions Judge"

Thanks for all your help on this, it has tied up the loose ends. His first wife died in 1884 aged 29 in fulham, I had thought she may have travelled to India with him, after their marriage in 1877, but it seems she stayed in England.

His wife is in 1881 at www.familysearch.org/ as "Joanna Nicholl" (listed as "wife of a barrister"), with mother "Joanna Laudsey".

A search at books.google.com shows him "called to the bar" in 1877 (Lincoln's Inn, and his degree from St. John's College, Cambridge)
http://www.lincolnsinn.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=110&Itemid=123 has info on sources from there.

 - his entry in Alumni cantabrigienses has a lot of information about his schooling/work etc.
