date please and where?

Hi folks, This chap is a relative of mine probably from Carlisle area. Can anyone suggest what date this is, what age he is and how to find out where this is please? Any help gratefully recieved...Thanks

an easy way to find out where it is it to look in the street directories for EB Thompson shop at 153 (whatever road)  :)

there are some online at Histroicaldirectories.org also on Ancestry otherwise at the local county records office

realistically this could be anywhere from 1910-30's.
looking in the shop window I can't see anything relatively modern that would put it at the later date so I would say 1910-20ish.
Can we see the back as a stamp box may narrow it down.

Certainly a period where beating your carpets was more common an activity than hoovering them.

What an interesting photo!  I wonder if the price of spades at 3/6 or 3/11 depending on size might help to date it?  Incredible to think that's 17.5 pence for the smaller or very nearly 20 pence for the larger one!

We certainly don't know we're born, but then again no wonder we're not as fit these days as our ancestors were.  They must have had impressive muscles from all the carpet beating!

p.s. have searched Historical Directories and the 1901 census for hardware/ironmongers/shopkeepers called Thompson but without success.
