I had thought of the Gregorian thing and then realised it wouldn't apply.

I know that there were several Elder families living in Carnwath at the time, but the Jean Elder who married Mr Purdie, did so in 1734 and she is the one mentioned in the national archives, as taking action against some of her siblings or relatives. It's a shame I'm not anywhere near the archives, perhaps reading the whole issue would resolve the problem.

So the puzzle still remains, unless the transcript in the archives is incorrect, which I doubt really.
