Hallifax's in India
« on: Monday 15 November 10 12:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I have been trying to find Guy Hallifax, born 9 March 1858 to Rev, Joseph Hallifax & Clara Isabella Hardwicke.  He only appears in the 1861 census age 3 then disappears.  I have looked for a death but no luck.

I was looking at the "British families in India" website (looking for a different Hallifax, Samuel), when I cam across a mention of a Guy Hallifax marrying a Mina Anne Lawford in Queenstown in 1881, but cannot find anything else out about him.  I am desperately hoping this might be my Guy Hallifax, but don't know where to go from here.

Hope someone can help

Thanks
Julia :)

There was a Guy Halifax in Basutoland who endorsed Aitchison's binoculars in 1895 (The Graphic, Saturday August 31st 1895) and
donated £10 to the Captain Scott fund in 1913 (The Times, April 9th 1913).

Guy Hallifax, trader in Basutoland is mentioned in "A South African Kingdom: The Pursuit of Security in Nineteenth-Century Lesotho" by Elizabeth A. Eldredge - viewable on Google books. Footnote 17 to Chapter 12, on page 230.

Hi shaunj,
Thanks for the info.  I have seen reference to another Guy Hallifax (not mine, although he might be related in some way) his name is Guy Waterhouse Hallifax, I am totally confused as I can't find a link between this Hallifax & my Hallifax'.  Guy waterhouse Hallifax is probably related to the Saville Hallifax's in London.  Thanks for your help, I will check out these references to see if I get anywhere with them.
Thank you

A Guy Hallifax died in the Mental Hospital in Pretoria South Africa on 29  August 1929. Probate was granted in London in April 1930 to John Gordon Hallifax, a civil servant. There is a passenger list showing that John Gordon Hallifax was at that time 46 years old so was born around 1884.

In the 1891 census John G Hallifax born around 1884 in Basutoland  is with mother Mina Anne Hallifax at 26 Queens Terrace, Southampton, together with brother Harold Francis Hallifax (who later marries in Ontario, Canada) and sisters Edith and Mina.
