Little Dunmow Pub
« on: Monday 15 November 10 12:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I've received the birth certificate for one of my folks, and at time of registration his parents were living at a pub they kept at Brook Street, Little Dunmow. This was in 1866. Does anyone have any idea what this pub would be, and does it exist today? It's a funny question, but it might just help solve a mystery for me!

Thanks Sam

Hi again Trevor

I'm drawing a bit of a blank with the Little Dunmow part of the mystery! I am looking for a William Curson, who was supposedly a beerhouse keeper living in Brook Street, Little Dunmow in 1866. He was supposedly married to a Priscilla Chandler, but I can't find anything out about William or his marriage to Priscilla. I have a feeling he didn't exist, I don't know why.

Thanks, Sam

Hi,

The title Beerhouse Keeper has me wondering if it was one of those set ups where people legally sold beer from a house, rather than a Pub.

Regards.

Hi Trevor,

I am trying to find the father of my ancestor, Mary Jane Curson. I can't find her birth so I've ordered her brother, Henry's birth certificate, and it gives the father as William Curson, Beerhouse Keeper and his mother's address as informant is Brook Street, Little Dunmow. The mother, Priscilla (nee Chandler), Henry, Mary Jane and a sister Elizabeth are together in the 1871 census. The family (or just the mother!) moved around a lot as she was from Framlingham, Suffolk, had Mary Jane in the London area (Chelsea or Battersea depending on which census you look at!), Henry in Little Dunmow and then another daughter in Leics. Oh and in between all that the family are in Rushall, Staffs in the 1871 census. I wouldn't believe it all if it wasn't such a rare name and the places of birth weren't the same!

Anyway, that's the mystery behind the question, hope I haven't bored you all to tears! I think you all may be right about the house to legally sell beer from, thinking about it, I had an ancestor that did the same in Leicester.

Vabbott, I think that well could be William Curson, I think I may have found him on a census as a Travelling Wine Merchant.

Thanks very much

Sam
