missing birth cert
« on: Monday 15 November 10 19:01 GMT (UK) »
Please can anyone tell me if there is any other way to trace a birth. My gg g'mother (Winifred Duke )born c1876 does not show up in the register. I have her marriage cert 1904 , which shows her former name as Scott and her father as George d'cd. Do not know her mothers name. Or does anyone know the family? They lived in the Sunderland/Durham area and my gg g'father(William Usher Duke) was a soldier in the DLI. W ould most appreciate any info at all.
Many thanks

Hi

If she was born 1876 - have you looked for her on the 1881 census which is free to search at

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

Have you checked the 1911 census entry to establish her actual birthplace

Hello - thank you for your response

The 1911 census shows her birth place as Durham Sunderland.
Her father was an engineer and the witnesses at the marriage were Richard and Isabella Duncan. They married in the parish of St Thomas - Bishopwearmouth on 21st May 1904.

Hello

I was not aware of any siblings and no one from the family seems to remember her parents or any brothers and sisters,
but in the 1911 census she is shown living with her husband, daughter and brother-in-law John Scott, but we have not been able to find him either - but its such a common name its difficult to trace.

Thank you

So we do know that she had a brother called John then  ;)
Was he too born in Sunderland? Although don't take that as gospel because by the time we are adults we often have forgotten exactly where we were born and are likely to remember where we grew up.
