Re John - It says on the census that he was -  but if so why can't we find him either, its so frustrating.

Thank you

Is it possible that Winifred lied about her age when she got married ?

There's a Winifred Scott birth registered in Newcastle Upon Tyne in Q4 of 1880.  (10b 129)

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

One would presume that if Winifred is born in 1876 then her dad ought to still be alive in 1881  ;D By the law of averages.

I found one George Scott who was a Creosote Engineer- he was living in Sunderland but he was born in London.

RG11/ 4996 folio 128 page 85

No John or Winifred with him though  :(

Perhaps that's what you should do...try and trace any George Scott through the censuses.

Mind you if Winifred was the oldest child it's possible she was born before marriage and given mum's surname.

Maybe as an engineer he travelled a lot  ::)

It is of course possible that she lied about having a dad called George- perhaps he was a step dad?

Thank you all

We have thought that she lied about her father maybe because she was illegitimate, and we have checked the creosote engineer - but where are the children? you would assume they were with the mother but we can't find unless they are listed under her maiden name, which we don't know.
John is 29 born c1882 in S/land Durham working as a labourer in the shipyard he is single. They lived @112 Victor Street
Monkwearmouth. We have come to the conclusion that maybe both parents died and the children ended up in care but how do we check as we don't have the mothers name.

I should also have mentioned earllier that my gg g'dmother had more than one name ( everyone assumed she made it up ) but now I'm not so sure ,but again all trails have gone cold. Winifred Mary Angelina Barrett Scott Mills. The Mills comes from her godmother  (we think) and we assumed the Scott from her father and the Barrett from her mother but we can't find a Barrett with a George Scott.
I'ts a real headache

When and where did she die?

Despite having all those names she married as plain old Winifred  :o

June 1904

William Usher  DUKE  Sunderland  10a 1134

Winifred  SCOTT   Sunderland  10a 1134

You mention that one of her names was after her godmother- I wonder if that suggests she was religious at all, maybe Catholic?
The girls in my husbands family were all been given a saints name when they were confirmed, but most hate them so they never get used.

Hi again

Yes she was possibly catholic but I think married out of the church,  I can remember my mother saying that the
priest would come by and tell them they were living in sin . But  I assumed she was talking about my grandmother. Winifred's marriage cert is Church of England
