Kirtland family in Bletchingdon
« on: Wednesday 17 November 10 02:56 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to get further back into my Kirtland family tree, searching for a marriage for John to Martha c1772. Their first known child Elizabeth was baptised 1773 in Charlton-in-Otmoor, then subsequent children in Bletchingdon: John 1775; Richard 1778; Thomas 1781; William 1784; George 1786; James 1789 and George 1792.
A search of online records for a marriage for John Kirtland and Martha has found nothing. I would really like to know their origins and I'd also be pleased to find out about descendants of their children.
Any help gratefully received.

From the OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837):

22 FEB 1773 - John KIRTLAND (of Marsh Gibbon) to Martha HONOUR at Charlton-on-Otmoor

(This is the only JK/Martha marriage on the index.)

The actual entry in the Charlton registers may give some further information, eg. witnesses.

Hi Pennie,

Wow that is fantastic, thank you! That looks a very likely match, I've never seen that one in the IGI or anywhere I searched before.

Thanks!

Kells.  :)

Thanks Steve, I have noted those names just in case. I had a look on the IGI for Honour but found no Martha. There were many other names though which could be her relatives, and perhaps she is just missing or misspelt - could be Mary.

Thanks,

Kells.  :)

The IGI has extracted baptisms for Charlton-on-Otmoor for 1700-1884, but no marriages.

To check which other parishes have extracted records on the IGI, see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm.

Thanks Pennie,
I've tried that also, might have to trawl through a few different nearby parishes as the general IGI search terms don't have any matches.

Apologies.  Forgot to say Mary Honours 1756 Bapt. was in Charlton on Otmoor.

Witnesses at John Kirtland and Martha's marriage were,  Daniel Horns & Edmond Rice.

Edmund Rice seems to be a witness to a lot of marriages in Charlton on Otmoor, up until 1794.  Then John Rice takes over.

EDIT. Edmund Rice was the cleric.  Still don't help though.

Thanks Steve, I had just assumed it was Charlton anyway.

It is good to know the marriage witnesses, another piece of information that I didn't have, I'll take anything!

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,

Kells  :)
