Marriage look up please
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 17:00 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for a marriage before 1740 between James Sumpter and Elizabeth (Deere? - online trees give her this name but I've found no evidence, and I'm always dubious when none of them can find the marriage!).

I'd be very grateful for a look-up.

They baptised a couple of children in Caldecote 1740-43, then were in Boxworth 1752-54. Elizabeth was buried in Boxworth in 1754 with James being buried there in 1782, although James and his daughters seem to have lived in Graveley from 1760 where three known daughters married, with two more probable daughters (from the 1744-51 gap?) also marrying in Graveley.

Many thanks in advance

David

Hi
Not sure if this helps or confuses but I found 2 bits of info as follows:

There is a marriage in Girton between a Richard Matthewes, of Histon, & Elizabeth Deere, of this p (Girton) 18 Oct 1744.  The reason I mention this is because the other item of info I found was the baptism of 2 children in Girton as follows:
Day: 29 Jul 1745
Forenames: Ann
Surname: SUMPTER
Relationship: dau of
Father forenames: James
Mother forenames: Elizabeth
and
Day: 13 Jan 1747
Forenames: Sarah
Surname: SUMPTER
Relationship: dau of
Father forenames: James
Mother forenames: Elizabeth

Now it may just be co-incidence or fill in a gap for you
Regards

That's great! Many thanks for the baptism details, which certainly look to be the right daughters, as the two who married in Graveley but whose baptisms I hadn't got were also Ann and Sarah.

I wonder if the online trees are barking up the wrong tree with Elizabeth Deere. I suspect that the sheep mentality may have played a part in all 10 trees showing her as Deere.

Thanks again

David

Aha! I've just been looking for this marriage, but of course, can't find anything. I was tentatively using the surname Deere, but upon reading this, and also finding the record for Elizabeth Deere and Richard Matthews, I don't think its likely that Deere is the right name.

The only downside to this is that the only marriage between a James Sumpter and an Elizabeth that I can find is in Devon, in 1787, which of course doesn't fit at all.

My connection is Elizabeth Sumpter, who married John Ell.

Hi Crista

John Ell and Elizabeth Sumpter are the line I was looking at as well. Which of their many children interest you?* Their daughters Elizabeth and Mary both married Lugsdens who were cousins, which is the name I was researching, but I also took an interest in the Ells as I too was born in Henlow

I think the Deere name may have arisen from the will of James Sumpter who mentions a William Deere in it, but I'm less than convinced that he was an in-law

David

* Just seen on another board where you posted overnight what your connection is. I'm davidcarca from that other thread. I have a tree on Ancestry, LUGSDIN/Lugsden, which includes the Sumpters. If you can't get into it I'll send you an invitation

Hi David,
Thanks for your reply.
Ohh, so the Lugsdens they married are cousins? As I said elsewhere, I've only just started with this branch of my tree and am still piecing it together. I assumed the 2 Lugsden boys were related just hadn't worked out how, but thats good to know thanks.

I saw your Ancestry tree yesterday acutally, only had a quick look but I did read the note you made about William Deere. Unless it stated for sure "father in law", I'm still not convinced Deere is the right Elizabeth.
Seems to be a few gaps with the women's surnames in this tree (like the Bimson issue!)

Back to the drawing board for a bit today while the kids are at school, see what other troublesome women I can uncover haha!
