STANTON/LYONS MARRIAGE>

Hi there
I'm trying to find marriage details of my grt grandparents.
Michael Stanton to Ellen Lyons.   I believe they were married in Co. Cork. Ireland. about 1878 - 1883.   He was a labourer.   Ellens mother may have been called Hannah Lyons.
I would really love some help!

Full Civil registration started in Ireland in 1864 - so the marriage of Michael & Ellen should have been registered :

lots of Lyons marriages in County Cork over those years, so didn't think the search would be easy without a detailed location - but there is a possible match with the surname Staunton...

I dont think Staunton is right.
I think they were in  Queenstown urban Cork.

Spelling of surnames were not standardized and could depend on literacy, who filled out the record etc - so I wouldn't discount Staunton instead of Stanton as a possibility..

Queenstown/Cobh is included in the registration district of Cork.

I would second what Shane has written. I have done a lot of research on Lyons in Cork, and one can find that even the same priest has written in Lyons, Lyon, Lion, Line, Lines.

One cannot overstress the question of literacy levels in Ireland at that time, even among priests. On top of that the people themselves were generally illiterate, so never had a written form of their name, only a spoken one, and the priest just wrote down what he heard.

The proximity of Stanton and Staunton would make me believe that it was worth a lot more work in researching this marriage.

I'ts a puzzle. On the 1901 census both Michael Stanton and his wife, Ellen, are described as Illiterate but on the 1911 census they are Literate!
They were both born in Cork City where they lived for at least 20 years and raised their family.  Both are R.C.  and I believe they were married between 1881 - 1887.
I'll keep trying.
