John WEBB, date of birth and place of birth unknown
« on: Friday 19 November 10 15:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks,

I wonder if anyone can help with this message that was sent to me?

Quote
John WEBB, date of birth and place of birth unknown, married a Mary MOUNTGOMERY at Chatham, St. Marys on 20.11.1764(CityArk)   John is OTP., but Mary was of the Parish of St. James and I am trying to find out which St. James Parish Mary came from as it is possible that John originally came from the same parish, but came to Chatham for employment possibly in the Dockyard, and when he was able, sent for his "childhood sweetheart".    I have found no trace of a Mary MOUNTGOMERY in St. James, Cooling., or St. James Grain.

The later generations of the Webb family were naval men, either mariners Coastguard or RN, or employed at a dockyard, Chatham, Sheerness or Deptford, possibly shipwrights.   I did find a Mary MOUNTGOMERY, baptised 1740 at St. James Westminster, IGI, but understand that the Parishes of Westminster are a distance from the Thames and if John was a shipwright or similar he would possibly have come from a parish closer to "water" ?

My chief objective is to find out where John WEBB came from and his wife Mary MOUNTGOMERY.

Focusing on St. James as far as I can make out it is not too far away from The Thames where there could have been a dockyard or ship builder at that time. After all in those days walking miles was a regular thing for work.

Cheers John

Hi

The history of the docks and London are further down the river Thames.

Hi

The parish registers of St James Garlickhythe are indexed on the IGI 1535-1809 and 1854-1864

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyLondon_including_Middlesex_(A-M).htm#L

Residency for a marriage was only for the three weeks prior to the marriage, not the parish where a person was born, only where a person was living at the time which might be very different from where they were baptised. You would expect a parish register to state county if the parish of residency was outside, in this case Kent. So St James Westminster Middlesex, St James Garlickhythe London. The fact it just states St James may indicate her residency at the time was more local.
