1881  RG 11/930/115/10

The Royal Dragon
59 King St Maidstone

Benjamin Bristow  52   Farm lab     Princess Risborough
Jane Bristow                                   Princess Risborough

+ 4 boarders all described as farm labourers

Strange he is described as that as he is obviously living in a pub

No sign in 1891 and this looks as if it might be his death

Yes, it seems likely that as the MACE connection is linked to the man whose Birth Registered Bromley, as opposed to MEDWAY (Chatham), that its a smoked herring   :P

Wow - thanks everyone.  I don't have John Thomas Bristow's birth certificate, just his marriage and death.  He died aged 37 from chemical poisoning whilst working at the Gas Works in Beckton.  My guess at his mother was purely from census info as I have the 1891 census for him that confirms he was born Chatham.  From that I tried to find a John Bristow from Kent the right age on earlier census'. I agree it looks like I should have been looking for Benjamin in Buckinghamshire.  I was led down the path of Benjamin being married to Elizabeth Mace purely from the Harriet Mace connection where Elizabeth Bristow was living with Harriet Mace.  Thats the trouble when people move from county to county - you have to guess where they might have come from!

Thank you all very much - this really helps

Kind regards
Emma
